Hot water system power sources...
When it comes to choosing a hot water system, the first decision you’ll need to make is the energy source. How do you determine which type of hot water system is best for you? You’ve got options like electricity, gas, solar, and heat pump. But can you combine energy sources? Let’s explore.
Let’s start with electric hot water systems. They are generally affordable to purchase and install. However, keep in mind that they tend to be the most expensive to run, especially if you opt for the continuous (full day) rate. If you choose to go with off-peak electricity, you’ll save on running costs, but you’ll need a larger tank to ensure the water heated overnight lasts you throughout the day. Do note that off-peak electricity may not be available in all homes.
Gas hot water systems are another option worth considering. If you have access to natural gas, it can be a cost-effective choice, particularly when compared to electricity (unless you have solar panels). The great thing about gas hot water systems is that they can heat water as needed, since gas rates remain consistent throughout the day. Alternatively, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) bottles are an option, but expect higher running costs.
Now, let’s talk about solar hot water systems. These consist of solar collector panels and a storage tank. For a four-person household, a solar collector area of around four square meters (two panels) and a 300-360L tank usually suffice. It’s important to have a larger tank to account for days with less sunlight or more showers than usual. To ensure hot water even on cloudy days, the storage tank typically incorporates an electric or gas booster element.
Lastly, we have heat pump technology. This form of electric storage tank system operates on the same principle as a fridge or air conditioner, extracting heat from the air to heat the water tank. Heat pumps are especially efficient and make even more sense if you already have solar panels on your home. By utilizing your own “free” electricity, you power the hot water system, saving on costs.
So, as you can see, there are several factors to contemplate when selecting a hot water system. Reach out to us, the Australian Licensed Hot Water Shop, at 0429 399 888, and we’ll guide you through the process. Storage tank or instantaneous..?
What are the benefits of choosing a storage tank or instantaneous continuous hot water system for your home! When it comes to hot water systems, you want efficiency, reliability, and convenience. With a storage tank system, you’ll have a reservoir of hot water ready for use whenever you need it. This is perfect for larger households or those who rely on hot water for multiple tasks simultaneously. On the other hand, an instantaneous continuous system provides hot water on demand, heating the water as it flows through the system. This option is ideal for smaller households or those who prioritise energy efficiency and space-saving.
